Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body mass index (BMI) is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. People who are overweight or obese have a greater chance of developing heart disease, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, and certain cancers. Even a small weight loss (just 5 to 10 percent of your current weight) will help to lower your risk of developing diseases associated with obesity.
